How AlphaPet Ventures GmbH is hiring top tech talent with 42matches

We sat down with their CTO Markus Schneider for a virtual chat to discuss the evolving situation of tech recruiting, what Oktoberfest has to do with it and, of course, the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.

How did you hear about 42 matches?

I had the benefit of knowing about 42matches as they were working with us in my previous venture. Our investor’s HR department recommended them in case we needed a headhunter. So, we knew they were doing a great job before we even opened our company.

What do you think about the quality of service and cooperation with 42matches?

I have a positive experience with working with 42matches. They focus on understanding what our needs are as a company, what we need in people, which kind of personality we look for, and what kind of technical skills. If you build a small team they understand which personalities make your team stronger.

The name really fits, it’s all about matchmaking. 42matches is also looking into what a candidate wants, where they want to be, as we relocate them from different countries such as India, Ukraine or Russia for example.

If I say, for example, that I want to have people who are ready to relocate to Munich, they will know what the needs and terms are. I will not receive a random CV from someone who just wants to move out of a country but doesn’t know where. I want candidates to understand what is needed when it comes to the visa and the blue card, everything that 42matches is taking care of.

What is the most important thing in a recruiting agency?

With the recruiting agency, it is good to have the option to choose from different candidates and also to have a really good pre-filter considering the things I and the company needs. For example, personality, skills and understanding what is the motivation of people to work for us. And then taking care of the relocation or legalities, as well as guiding people on which documents they need.

How do you see the future of tech recruiting evolving?

It needs to be more distributed, not only in Germany but also worldwide. We previously focused on gathering people at one place, but now we have people in a hub or working fully remotely wherever they want.

What is your idea of remote or hybrid work?

For over 1,5 years now we are working mostly remote. We even hire remotely nowadays, even if candidates don’t live in Munich and they are fit for us. In the future, the office should be something more like an event area, a place where people can work together but also socialize. If people are not working together in the same space, you will need to organize some events and find ways for them to socialize.

How do meetings at Oktoberfest usually go?

I don’t know if Oktoberfest is a good place for networking. 🙂 For me, it’s more about celebrating with people we know. It is a great place to go for drinks and Bavarian food.

What is the advantage of living in Munich?

Living in Munich you have one of the highest living standards in the world, it’s really clean, you are near the mountains and beautiful landscapes. You can meet a lot of people, but if you look at other global cities it feels like a place where you can relax. You have a combination of Bavarian friendliness and an open mindset.

How are you creating a community?

My idea of hiring people who will work for us is that they first of all need to fit in the team. Then they need to love our challenges. Lastly, they need to be able to solve them, so the technical skill set comes in place. For me, putting the team and passion comes before knowledge. If you have passion and you feel comfortable, then you can learn anything, if you’re hungry for it.

The important thing for me is to build an environment where you can be human, grow as a person, do the things that you love, while at the same time you are solving the problems of our company.

What’s the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?

You mean other than 42? 🙂 On a personal level, trying to do something that you love doing and have passion for. Also spending time with people you respect, like and share the same ambition with. That is the most valuable thing in life for me.
